Angels Pursuing Porcello

The Angels have been aggressive this off-season, trading for Tommy Hanson, signing Joe Blanton and Ryan Madson and of course, wooing Josh Hamilton away from the Rangers. Now they have their sights on Rick Porcello.

The Angels have contacted the Tigers about a possible trade for starting pitcher Rick Porcello, according to Danny Knbler of CBSSports.com. Porcello is thought to be a potential trade candidate, along with fellow starter Drew Smyly, following the Tigers signing of Anibal Sanchez to a five year $80M deal. The Angels join the Pirates, Phillies, Twins and Padres as possible suitors for the Tigers righty.

Porcello is just 23 years old, but he has already started 120 games for the Tigers across four major league seasons. Drafted in the 27th pick of the 2007 draft, Porcello spent just one season in the minors before landing a spot in Detroit rotation. He has been a fairly average starter in his career with an ERA- of 107 for his career and a FIP- of 100, but he been durable as well. He has averaged 172 innings a season in his career and made more than 30 starts in all but one season since reaching the majors.

The Angels have signed Joe Blanton and traded for Tommy Hanson already this offseason as they rebuild their rotation following the departure of Zack Greinke, Ervin Santana and Dan Haren. Porcello would join those newly acquired players, C.J Wilson and Jared Weaver to complete the Angels rotation.
