Marlins rumors: Miami not pursuing Dariel Alvarez, Aledmys Diaz

The Marlins have "zero interest" in a pair of Cuban defectors, Dariel Alvarez and Aledmys Diaz.

The Miami Marlins have "zero interest" in a pair of touted Cuban prospects, Dariel Alvarez and Aledmys Diaz, who were declared free agents by Major League Baseball earlier this month, reports Joe Frisaro of MLB.com:

According to a source, Miami has zero interest in either Dariel Alvarez or Aledmys Diaz, two Cuban natives who were declared free agents earlier this month.

Last season, the Marlins were major players in the Yoenis Cespedes sweepstakes. However, at this point the team is not in a position to spend millions of dollars on unproven international players, according to Frisaro.

Diaz is a 22-year-old from Villa Clara. The 6-foot-1 shortstop defected from the Cuban National team last summer during a tournament in the Netherlands. Both he and Alvarez have established residency in Mexico, which was their first step in being declared free agents by MLB.

Diaz is known for his ability to hit for power and average, according to Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com. He’s considered an average runner with an above-average arm. He is closer to major league-ready than Alvarez.

The 24-year-old Alvarez has the ability to play all three outfield positions. At 6-foot-2 and 190 points, Alvarez "has impressed major league scouts with his above-average arm" during his time in playing in Mexico, according to Sanchez.
