Red Sox sign Shane Victorino

The Red Sox have agreed to a deal with Shane Victorino, reports Alex Speier of WEEI.com. Originally thought to be a deal in the range of three years and $38 million, Ken Rosenthal reports that the agreement is actually for three years and just a little bit more:

Victorino, 32, hit .255/.321/.383 in 2012 for the Phillies and Dodgers. He stole 39 bases, being caught only six times all season. The Red Sox were reportedly bidding against the Indians and a third team, but were able to get the deal done.

Boston already has center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, and could slot Victorino into right field. He played left field for the Dodgers last season after being traded, moving over for All-Star Matt Kemp. The Red Sox have now acquired two outfielders (Victorino, Jonny Gomes) and a first baseman (Mike Napoli), taking care of their biggest offseason needs with a full day still remaining in Nashville.

Victorino made $9.5 million last season, and this is a significant raise on that. It is Victorino's first time in free agency, as the Phillies acquired him in the Rule 5 Draft in 2004 from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
