The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed 3rd baseman Eric Chavez according to Jon Heyman. The deal is for 1 year and $3 million according to Jack Magruder:
#Dbacks sign Chavez for One year, $3M. Confirmed. Other than possible blockbuster, appear done here
— Jack Magruder (@JackMagruder) December 5, 2012
Chavez, 34, mostly known for his 13 seasons with the Athletics, is a career .267/.343/.476 hitter but spent much of the last two seasons coming off the bench to relieve Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira. He was effective for the Yanks in 2012, hitting .281/.348/.496 with 16 home runs in 313 plate appearances.
While the D'backs add to their busy off-season (does it feel busy or is it just me?), the bigger story right now is that yet another 3rd baseman comes off the board -- and the Yankees have yet to address a gaping whole caused by A-Rod's hip injury.
