The Toronto Blue Jays designated Darin Mastroianni for assignment today, which opened up a spot on the 40-man roster, the club announced in a press release. The move was required to make room on the 40-man roster for newly signed reliever Francisco Cordero.
Mastroianni, 26, has spent four seasons in the Blue Jays system since being drafted in the sixteenth round of the 2007 amateur draft. Primarily an outfielder, Mastroianni hit .268/.353/.377 in 562 plate appearances combined with the Double-A and Triple-A affiliates of Toronto. The 26-year-old even got called up to the show last season, for one game in which he went 0-for-2 with a strikeout.
- Blue Jays DFA Darin Mastroianni - Bluebird Banter
"Darin got into 1 game with the Jays, last year, going 0 for 2 with a sac bunt. I kind of like the guy, I think he'd be a fine fourth outfielder, for some team, but the Jays have plenty of options for that role."
