Yankees Notes: Burt Reynolds, Alex Smith, Russell Martin

The New York Yankees have had an extremely busy offseason. From the Michael Pineda trade to opening up cash for a pair of bench players after trading A.J. Burnett's albatross contract. Let's checkout the latest happenings from the Bronx:

  • Baseball Prospectus' Kevin Goldstein reports the Yankees signed Burt Reynolds, an outfielder who played in the Independent League last year. This Burt Reynolds is the cousin of Yankees star second baseman Robinson Cano, and not the one who starred in Boggie Nights.
  • Josh Norris of the Trentonian reports the club also signed another Independent League player in right-handed pitcher Alex Smith. Though he's also right-handed and named Alex Smith, don't confuse him with 49ers starting quarterback (that's a football team, folks) Alex Smith.
  • In other news, Yankees GM Brian Cashman tells Marc Carig of the Star-Ledger there are no ongoing contract negotiations talks with catcher Russell Martin. The Yankees offered Martin a three-year extension before the two sides shelved talks and agreed to a one-year deal.
