Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports is reporting talks between the St. Louis Cardinals and Yadier Molina continue to progress in the direction. It was reported last week the two sides were nearing a deal that could be agreed to within a week.
Molina's agent, Melvin Roman, said "We are making progress and hopefully we can work something out," on Monday. The most telling news in Rosenthal's report is the club is willing to give the 29-year-old a four or five year extension.
"Molina, 29, is eligible for free agency at the end of the season. The Cardinals likely are willing to give him a deal of four and possibly five years, sources say."
With what we know about catchers breaking down, this will likely be the last multi-year deal Molina signs if he can land a four-or-five year deal from the club. If the two sides can't reach an agreement, Molina can test the market as the top catcher in the open market and command a deal of his liking.
