The Seattle Mariners are looking closely at signing left-handed reliever Hong-Chih Kuo and could be close to making a deal, according to Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times. Kuo was non-tendered by the Los Angeles Dodgers in December.
Kuo, 30, played his entire 7-season career with the Dodgers before that non-tender and maintains a career 3.73 ERA. But if you're signing Kuo, you're not looking at his ERA (you should be looking at FIP anyway), you're looking at his eye-popping 10.6 K/9.
In barely 300 innings, Kuo has earned 4 wins above replacement as one of the league's better closers. Do note that he's had a number of surgeries and recently battled anxiety.
