What What What Just Happened? MLBDD Week 5 in Review

Enjoy the SuperBowl? If you're like the rest of us, it's easy to forget everything that happened over the last week, and what you didn't forget you could have easily missed. So, what just happened? The big news of the week was the Edwin Jackson signing in Washington and the Josh Hamilton relapse (ugh), but there were tons of other stories in between.

Here's our week 5 in review, starting with the oldest first:

• Pittsburgh Pirates Sign Juan Cruz To Minor League Deal - MLB Daily Dish
  The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed relief pitcher Juan Cruz to a minor league contact with an invitation to Spring Training, as the team announced on Wednesday. Cruz has bounced around with numerous teams since hitting the majors as an elite, flame-throwing pitching prospect back in 2001.
• Washington Nationals Sign Chad Durbin To Minor League Contract - MLB Daily Dish
  The Washington Nationals have signed relief pitcher Chad Durbin to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training, according to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN. Last year, Durbin landed a Major League contract with the Cleveland Indians in March but struggled for most of the season.

• Padres Sign Micah Owings to 1-Year, $1M Deal - MLB Daily Dish
  The San Diego Padres have signed pitcher/slugger/wunderkind Micah Owings to a minor league deal, according to Dan Hayes of the North County Times. The deal includes an invitation to Spring Training.
• Seattle Mariners Sign Carlos Guillen - MLB Daily Dish
  Seattle Mariners signed infielder Carlos Guillen to a minor league deal with an invite to ML spring training.
• Blue Jays Designate Darin Mastroianni For Assignment - MLB Daily Dish
  The Toronto Blue Jays designated Darin Mastroianni for assignment today, which opened up a spot on the 40-man roster, the club announced in a press release. The move was required to make room on the 40-man roster for newly signed reliever Francisco Cordero.
• Indians Sign Rafael Perez to 1-Year, $2M Deal - MLB Daily Dish
  The Cleveland Indians have signed left-handed pitcher Rafael Perez to a 1-year, $2 million deal, according to Jordan Bastian of mlb.com. The deal allows each to avoid arbitration and comes with a $25 thousand bonus if he appears in 55 games, according to Paul Hoynes.
• Nationals Win Arbitration Case over Lannan - MLB Daily Dish
  The arbitration panel deciding the Washington Natonals/John Lannan case has ruled in favor of the team, according to Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post. Lannan had requested $5.7 million, but the team offered and now only has to pay $5 million.
• Nationals, Edwin Jackson Agree To Deal - MLB Daily Dish
  Free-agent starting pitcher and the Washington Nationals have agreed to a deal.
• Chicago Cubs Sign Gerardo Concepcion - MLB Daily Dish
  The Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to sign pitcher Brian Tallet, according to Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus. Goldstein doesn't mention whether he'll receive a Major League contract, but it's unlikely given his performance over the past few years.
• Chicago Cubs, Matt Garza agree to 1-Year, $9.5M Deal - MLB Daily Dish
  The Chicago Cubs have signed Matt Garza to a 1-year, $9.5 million contract with bonuses, according to his agency, CAA Baseball. Garza and the Cubs thus avoid arbitration. Garza had filed for $10.225 million while the team offered $7.95 million -- so the agreed upon $9.5 is just over the halfway point.
• Pittsburgh Pirates To Sign Brian Tallet - MLB Daily Dish
  The Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to sign pitcher Brian Tallet, according to Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus. Goldstein doesn't mention whether he'll receive a Major League contract, but it's unlikely given his performance over the past few years.
• Los Angeles Angels To Sign Greg Smith - MLB Daily Dish
  The Los Angeles Angels and free agent pitcher Greg Smith have agreed to a minor league contract, according to Matt Eddy of Baseball America. Smith last appeared in the majors in 2010 with the Colorado Rockies.
• Milwaukee Brewers and Shaun Marcum Avoid Arbitration - MLB Daily Dish
  The Milwaukee Brewers announced this afternoon that they and right handed pitcher Shaun Marcum have effectively avoided arbitration. It is a one year deal, but the money terms have not yet been announced.
• Tampa Bay Rays Beat Jeff Niemann In Arbitration Case - MLB Daily Dish
  The Tampa Bay Rays won the arbitration case over right-handed starting pitcher Jeff Niemann today, reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. The two sides were $450K apart, and held their arbitration hearing earlier in the week.
• Los Angeles Dodgers Sign Todd Coffey - MLB Daily Dish
  The Los Angeles Dodgers and free-agent right-handed reliever Todd Coffey have agreed to a deal, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. It's a one-year deal worth $1.3 million with a club option for 2013, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, but Heyman later adds Coffey can earn an additional $350K in incentives. The deal is pending a physical.
• Baltimore Orioles Sign Jeff Larish - MLB Daily Dish
  Corner infielder Jeff Larish announced on his Facebook page (via Jane Lee of MLB.com) that he has signed with the Baltimore Orioles. It's a minor league deal with no invite to major league spring training, according to Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports.
• Cardinals, Alex Cora to Sign Minor League Deal - MLB Daily Dish
  The St. Louis Cardinals are close to signing Alex Cora to a minor league deal, according to Jesse Sanchez of mlb.com. Terms of the deal are not yet known.
• Red Sox, Aceves Agree to 1-Year, $1.2M Deal - MLB Daily Dish
  The Boston Red Sox have signed Alfredo Aceves to a 1-year, $1.2 million deal with $100 thousand in bonuses according to Nick Cafardo (via twitter).Aceves had filed at $1.6 million and the Red Sox offered $900 thousand, so the deal is just under the midpoint and allows each to avoid arbitration.
• Brad Penny Signs with Japanese Team for $3M - MLB Daily Dish
  Brad Penny has finally signed with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks in Japan's Pacific League, following rumors from Jerry Crasnick that a deal was near. The deal is worth $3 million plus incentives, according to NPB tracker.
• Nationals Sign Rick Ankiel - MLB Daily Dish
  According to William Ladson of MLB.com, the Washington Nationals have signed outfielder Rick Ankiel to a minor-league contract. If he makes the major-league roster, he could presumably platoon with Mike Cameron in centerfield, as Ladson notes.
• Orioles Trade Guthrie to Rockies for Lindstrom, Hammel - MLB Daily Dish
  The Baltimore Orioles have traded their Opening Day starter Jeremy Guthrie to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for Matt Lindstrom and Jason Hammel, according to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.
