Repeat After Me: MLBDD Week 12 Review

Can you believe we're already starting Week 13 of the year of the apocalypse? Yeah, me either. I'm no math major (Calc II was my effort-required wall), but I'm pretty sure that means April is just around the corner. And April around the corner means baseball!

Before we get too excited for the start of the regular season, let's take a look back at the major stories MLB Daily Dish covered over the past week. The past week was a particularly hard one if you're averse to hearing the gruesome details of injuries, like "significant blood loss" and "ligament detached from the bone."

It's this way every year, or it feels like it -- the last couple weeks of the off-season always seem to have a few injuries that take everything we just learned about how the teams will shake out and makes us question whether or not those things are still true.

• Utley Leaves Phillies Camp, Unlikely For Opening Day - MLB Daily Dish
  Philadelphia Phillies second basemen Chase Utley left camp today and will most likely start the season on the DL for the second straight year. Utley left camp to see a knee specialist about his tendinitis-stricken knees.
• Derek Holland Agrees to Five-Year Extension With Rangers - MLB Daily Dish
  Derek Holland agreed to a five-year contract extension with the Texas Ranger worth around $28 million this morning, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

• Royals Acquire Humberto Quintero, Jason Bourgeois - MLB Daily Dish
  The Kansas City Royals acquired catcher Humberto Quintero and outfielder Jason Bourgeois from the Houston Astros today, in exchange for left-handed relief prospect Kevin Chapman and a player to be named later.
• Padres, Nick Hundley Agree to Contract Extension - MLB Daily Dish
  The San Diego Padres have locked up catcher Nick Hundley to a three-year deal that will keep him under contract through 2014, with a club option (no buyout) for 2015. Hundley will make a guaranteed $9M, though he can earn up to $14M in total.
• Orioles Sign Dontrelle Willis - MLB Daily Dish
  According to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN (and, as confirmed by Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun), the Baltimore Orioles have signed lefty Dontrelle Willis to a minor-league deal with a split contract (he can make $700K pitching in the majors).
• Seattle Mariners Waive Cesar Jimenez - MLB Daily Dish
  Dave Cameron from FanGraphs is reporting via twitter that the Seattle Mariners have placed left handed pitcher Cesar Jimenez on waivers. He was out of options.
• Chris Carpenter Likely to Start Year on DL - MLB Daily Dish
  Cardinals' ace Chris Carpenter returned to St. Louis yesterday to undergo a series of tests on his neck and shoulder, and will likely begin the season on the disabled list, reports Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com.
• Seattle Mariners Release Shawn Camp - MLB Daily Dish
  The Seattle Mariners have released 36-year-old right-hander Shawn Camp, reports Greg Johns of MLB.com.
• Indians Claim VandenHurk, DFA Kelvin De La Cruz (Again) - MLB Daily Dish
  The Cleveland Indians claimed right-hander Rick VandenHurk, 26, off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays this afternoon, reports Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer.
• Chipper Jones to Retire After 2012 Season - MLB Daily Dish
  Chipper Jones has announced he intends to retire following the 2012 season, according to multiple sources (Bowman, Twitter).
• Mike Gonzalez Drawing Interest, Red Sox "Monitoring" The Market - MLB Daily Dish
  According to Jon Heyman, left-handed reliever Mike Gonzalez is starting to draw some interest. Gonzalez has a history of arm problems, and underwent knee surgery in October. He rejected a non-roster invitation from the Texas Rangers in March.
• Joba Chamberlain Dislocates Ankle, May Miss Season - MLB Daily Dish
  UPDATE: Chamberlain reportedly lost a life-threatening amount of blood when he dislocated his ankle last night, an updated report from Anthony McCarron has stated. McCarron spoke to a specialist who said that Joba's injury could not only endanger his career but also lead to a loss of limb.
• Bobby Jenks and Matt Bush Arrested for Hit-and-Run DUIs - MLB Daily Dish
  Boston Red Sox reliever Bobby Jenks and Tampa Bay Rays prospect Matt Bush and were arrested yesterday in Florida for separate DUI hit-and-run incidents.
• Joakim Soria Out for Season with Tommy John Surgery - MLB Daily Dish
  After a week of weighing his options, Joakim Soria has decided to undergo Tommy John surgery on his ailing right elbow, reports Bob Dutton of the KC Star.
• Rangers in Contract Extension Discussions with Ian Kinsler - MLB Daily Dish
  Rangers GM Jon Daniels met with Ian Kinsler's agent today to discuss a contract extension for the second baseman, reports T.R. Sullivan.
• Chipper Jones to Undergo Knee Surgery - MLB Daily Dish
  Braves third baseman Chipper Jones, who is set to retire after the 2012 season, will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery. The 39-year-old tore his meniscus on Thursday during a team stretch, according to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
• Braves Looking to Acquire Outfield Help - MLB Daily Dish
  David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution tweets that the Atlanta Braves have been looking to pick up a backup outfielder since before Chipper Jones' injury, and "will continue to do so." O'Brien notes that free agent OF Johnny Damon, 38, could be a fit -- though it's not clear how much interest Atlanta has in him.
• Mets Looking to Trade Mike Pelfrey - MLB Daily Dish
  According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the New York Mets are looking to trade right-hander Mike Pelfrey. Pelfrey has struggled so far this spring, with an ERA of 14.90. He's owed roughly $6M this year, though the Mets will only be on the hook for ~$1.5M if they release him before the beginning of the season.
• Giants Shopping Ryan Theriot, Mike Fontenot - MLB Daily Dish
  The San Francisco Giants have been telling teams today that they are looking to trade Ryan Theriot and Mike Fontenot. Both middle infielders could be fits with the Atlanta Braves (as middle infield depth) and Philadelphia Phillies (with Chase Utley injured).
• Ryan Madson to Undergo Tommy John Surgery - MLB Daily Dish
  According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, Ryan Madson needs Tommy John surgery, and will be out for the entire 2012 season. The ligament in Madson's elbow was reportedly torn off the bone.
• Angels Not Seeking Starting Pitching, Oswalt? - MLB Daily Dish
  Angels GM Jerry Dipoto said yesterday that the Angels are "not particularly" seeking starting pitching help despite rumors to the contrary, reports Bill Plunkett of the OC Register.

  The Indians are telling teams they are on the lookout for outfielders and starting pitching depth, reports Danny Knobler of CBS Sports.
