The New York Yankees have signed Jack Cust to a minor league deal, reports Sweeny Murti of WFAN radio.
The 33-year-old had signed a one year, $600K non-guaranteed Major League contract with the Houston Astros in January, but was released by the club yesterday.
The prototypical "three true outcomes" player, in his ten-year career the left-handed hitting Cust has a 31.7% K rate and a 17.2% BB rate while averaging a home run every 20 ABs.
Cust hit .213/.344/.329 with only three home runs in 67 games with the Mariners last year.
Though unlikely to play a large role on the big league squad, Cust will give the Yankees a solid back-up DH option against right-handed pitching should Raul Ibanez falter or get hurt.
