It's Thursday. There's baseball going on today. I have thoughts about these games, among other things. Here are some thoughts from the day that are either too short for their own post or too long for Twitter.
- Is anyone still worried about Jayson Werth? They are, right? People in D.C. haven't really been talking about it because people in D.C. don't really talk about baseball, but Werth continues to show a startling lack of pop. Now he's smacking singles and getting on base, but nobody gives $126 million to someone that profiles as a pretty good lead-off hitter.
Jason Heyward and Matt Wieters have something to say to all the naysayers: "Told ya so." Because yeah, they're both really, really, really good, and you should be shunned for claiming otherwise.
Last season, Omar Infante, A.J. Pierzynski and Derek Jeter combined to hit 21 home runs over 1747 plate appearances. That's one homer every 83 plate appearances. This season, they've hit combined to hit 12 home runs over 135 plate appearances. That's one every 11 plate appearances. I don't know what any of this means.
Remember those people who wondered if Brent Morel's big finish to last season might be an indicator of an upcoming breakout in 2012? Yeah, well the White Sox third baseman is hitting .103/.146/.128 so far with zero homers and he's struck out in more than 40 percent of his plate appearances. No go.
Among players striking out in more than 30 percent of their PA's so far, you basically have a bunch of guys with horrible numbers, a pair with average-ish numbers in Rickie Weeks and Robert Andino, and Yoenis Cespedes. Everyone knew it would be hard to predict how the Cuban would adjust to MLB pitching, but so far it's looking like fans of the Three True Outcomes have a new idol.
