Tuesday 4:23 PM ET: Jim Callis of Baseball America tweets the signing is done; signing bonus of $2 million.
Original: The Cincinnati Reds are close to signing first-round draft pick Nick Travieso, Reds general manager Walt Jocketty told Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. Travieso, the 14th overall draft pick, is from Archbishop McCarthy High School near Fort Lauderdale, Florida. MLB's recommended slot signing bonus for the fourteenth-overall draft pick is $2.375 million.
"We're pretty close," Reds general manager Walt Jocketty told MLB.com on Sunday. "I think we're just trying to finish up a couple things, hopefully sometime this week." "If we can get it done before we leave town," Jocketty said. The Reds begin a six-day road trip on Friday.
ESPN's Keith Law thought this pick was a reach, evaluating Travieso as a "huge arm-strength guy (up to 99) who will flash a plus slider but is maybe 50/50 to end up a starter"
The Reds have signed one of their three first-round draft picks thus far, and according to our First-Round Picks Signing Tracker, that was with high school outfielder Jesse Winker.
