The Detroit Tigers have placed right-handed reliever Octavio Dotel on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 3, with right shoulder inflammation. The Tigers have recalled right-hander Luke Putkonen from Triple-A to replace Dotel.

On the season, Dotel has maintained an ERA and WHIP of 4.42 and 1.091 over his 21 appearances spanning 18 1/3 innings. Despite his rather high ERA, Dotel has been more than solid according to his peripherals. The 38-year-old’s WHIP is impressive, and Dotel holds a staggering SO/9 of 13.3 on the year while only allowing 2.9 BB/9.

Putkonen made his major league debut earlier this season, surrendering seven earned runs over his six appearances and 7 1/3 innings of work. Putkonen has spent a majority of the season pitching for the Tigers Triple-A affiliate, where he’s held an ERA and WHIP of 3.32 and 1.421 over his 19 innings pitched.

Prior to 2012, Putkonen was use primarily as a starting pitcher. The 26-year-old sports a career minor league ERA and WHIP of 4.03 and 1.346 with 6.1 SO/9 and 2.8 BB/9.
