Boston Red Sox Release Marlon Byrd

The Boston Red Sox have released outfielder Marlon Byrd, the team announced this afternoon reports Sean McAdam of Comcast Sports Net New England. Byrd was designated for assignment three days ago, when the team had to make room on the roster for starting pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka.

Marlon Byrd, 34, started the year with the Cubs before being traded to Boston when the Red Sox were in dire need of outfield help. The Cubs received pitcher Michael Bowden, who was also designated for assignment, and minor league player Hunter Cervenka.

Byrd is an 11th-year veteran and has been with five different clubs, including four seasons with the Phillies, three with the Rangers, three with the Cubs, and two with the Nationals. His .210/.243/.245 line for the 2012 season is down from his career line of .278/.336/.413, with a noticeable drops in every category. He's generated a little more than fourteen wins above replacement for his career.
