The Colorado Rockies have signed catcher Omir Santos. Santos became a free agent this weekend when he refused his assignment to the Detroit Tigers Triple-A affiliate.
Santos was designated for assignment by the Tigers to make room for backstop Bryan Holaday. Before being designated, Santos had appeared in three games for the Tigers this season. Santos went 1-8 over that span with one RBI.
Santos has spent parts of four seasons at the major league level with the Tigers, Baltimore Orioles and New York Mets. Santos’ most extensive stint in the bigs came in 2009 when he registered 281 at-bats for the Mets and hit at a clip of .260/.296/.391.
Santos has spent much of the season playing for the Tigers Triple-A affiliate. Over his 24 games played and 85 at-bats, Santos maintained an OPS of .723 with eight extra-base hits and nine RBIs. Santos has a career minor league OPS of .643.
