Red Sox Set to Sign Deven Marrero

The Boston Red Sox are set to agree to a signing bonus with first round draft pick Deven Marrero, reports Jim Callis of Baseball America.

The 6' 1" shortstop's $2.05 million bonus makes him the first first-round draftee to sign for over his allotted slot value. He is the fourth to do so when accounting for draftees in the supplemental round.

The 24th overall pick in this year's draft, Marrero put up a .284/.340/.436 line at shortstop for Arizona State this year. While his offensive numbers are nothing to write home about, his defensive value is through the roof. Some have compared Marrero to a young Omar Vizquel.

Boston has yet to sign their other first-rounder, Brian Johnson, and now has only $331,700 to work with to sign him and their other draftees of the first ten rounds.
