In a series of roster moves, the Tampa Bay Rays have designated infielder Drew Sutton for assignment and off the team's 25-man roster, reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. The move was made to create a roster spot for infielder Jeff Keppinger, who has been activated from the 15-day disabled list this afternoon.
Sutton, 28, hit .271/.314/.354 in 51 plate appearances since being called up to Tampa Bay. The versatile infielder played all over, including both corner infield positions as well as second base. Heck, he even found himself batting cleanup for the Rays twice!
For roster junkies, the team also optioned outfielder Rich Thompson and added infielder Brooks Conrad to the 25-man roster.The team claimed Conrad off waivers from the Brewers recently. Also, reliever Joel Peralta dropped his appeal in regards to the pine tar incident, tweets Steve Berthiaume of ESPN, and will opt to begin serving his 8-game suspension tonight.
