The Toronto Blue Jays have called up right-hander Scott Richmond from Triple-A, reports Brendan Kennedy of the Toronto Star. To make room on their roster for Richmond, the Blue Jays demoted right-hander Robert Coello to Triple-A.
Initially it was speculated that Toronto was calling up Richmond, who started 24 games for the Blue Jays in 2009, to replace injured starter Henderson Alvarez. However, the team has said that Richmond’s call-up was planned prior to Alvarez’s injury, which at this time isn’t expected to cause him to miss any starts.
Toronto made the move with Richmond to replace Coello as the team’s long-relief option. Over his six appearances with the Blue Jays this season, Coello has allowed nine runs in only 6 1/3 innings on 10 hits and four walks.
Richmond appeared in one game with the Blue Jays last season, spending most of the year with the club’s Triple-A affiliate. This season in Triple-A, Richmond has maintained an ERA and WHIP of 5.46 and 1.412 over his 16 appearances, including 15 starts.
