The Texas Rangers will promote top pitching prospect Martin Perez tonight, a club official has told T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com.
Perez, 21, has a 5-5 record and 4.59 ERA in 15 starts at Triple-A Round Rock this season. Ranked the #31 prospect by Baseball America prior to the start of the 2012 season, Perez struggled early on this year but has turned things around of late. The young Venezuelan has a 1.13 ERA in his last two starts, allowing two runs on four hits in 16 innings of work.
No official announcement as to Perez's place in the rotation/bullpen or corresponding roster moves have been made, but are expected later today. Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News speculates that Perez’s promotion will push Scott Feldman into the bullpen and may leave rookie Justin Grimm as the odd man out, while others speculate that reliever Michael Kirkman will be optioned to Triple-A.
