The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded right-hander Shairon Martis to the Minnesota Twins, reports Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Martis has spent the 2012 season pitching for the Pirates’ Double- and Triple-A affiliates. Over his 11 appearances, including eight starts, in Double-A, the 25-year-old has maintained an ERA and WHIP of 4.56 and 1.200 with 5.1 SO/9 and 3.2 BB/9.
Martis was used as a reliever with the Pirates’ Triple-A club, allowing eight runs on eight hits and four walks over his 8 1/3 innings of work. Over his eight seasons in the minors, he’s posted an ERA and WHIP of 3.92 and 1.323.
Martis last appeared in the majors with the Washington Nationals in 2009. That season the right-hander maintained an ERA and WHIP of 5.25 and 1.424 with 3.6 SO/9 and 4.1 BB/9. He owns a career major league ERA and WHIP of 5.33 and 1.429 over his 20 appearances, including 19 starts.
