The Pittsburgh Pirates have claimed infielder/outfielder Oscar Tejada off of waivers from the Boston Red Sox.

In a corresponding roster move, the Pirates have designated left-handed pitcher Doug Slaten for assignment.

Tejada has been assigned to the Pirates’ Double-A affiliate. Before being released by the Red Sox, the 22-year-old had spent the season with their Double-A club. Over his 202 at-bats he hit at a clip of .262/.294/.396 with five home runs, 12 doubles and 31 RBIs.

Tejada spent the entire 2011 season in Double-A, and owns a career line of .273/.317/.379 over his six seasons in the minors.

Slaten signed a free agent contract with the Pirates in January and has appeared in 10 games for the club this season. Over his 13 innings pitched, Slaten maintained an ERA and WHIP of 2.77 and 1.308 with six strikeouts and eight walks.

Over parts of seven seasons in the majors, Slaten has a career ERA and WHIP of 3.52 and 1.480.
