To make room for Utley on their roster, the Phillies optioned infielder Michael Martinez to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Utley started the 2012 season on the Phillies disabled list due to chronic knee soreness. Earlier this week the club said it was hoping to have their veteran second baseman back by Wednesday, and it appears Utley will make his season debut for the Phillies tonight.
Prior to rejoining the Phillies, Utley spent significant time rehabbing his injury at the club’s extended spring training facility. He recently went on a minor league rehab stint which concluded with his appearance with Lehigh Valley yesterday. Over his 10 games in the minors, Utley hit at a clip of .189/.279/.351.
Martinez also started the season on the DL as he suffered a broken foot during spring training. The utility infielder has spent 16 games with the Phillies this season, posting a line of .133/.188/.200 over his 45 at-bats.
