Matsuzaka last pitched at the major league level on the 16th of May, 2011. The right-hander was placed on the Red Sox disabled list a few days later with an elbow injury, an ailment that later required Tommy John surgery.
Prior to hitting the DL, Matsuzaka struggled over his eight appearances, including seven starts. Over his span of 37 1/3 innings pitched, Matsuzaka only mustered an ERA and WHIP of 5.30 and 1.473.
Matsuzaka has started eight games in the minors this season while on rehab assignment. Matsuzaka maintained an ERA and WHIP of 3.65 and 1.081 over that span, including a 3.49 ERA and 1.024 WHIP in six starts at the Triple-A level.
Matsuzaka won 33 games over his first two seasons with the Red Sox but has struggled mightily since. Dice-K has a career ERA and WHIP of 4.25 and 1.397 over his five seasons in Boston.
