Following Friday's 7-4 loss to Stephen Strasburg and the Washington Nationals, the Boston Red Sox made a roster move. According to Ian Browne of MLB.com, Marlon Byrd has been designated for assignment to make room on the roster for starting pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka. Dice-K had been rehabbing in the minors, but now will be slotted into the starting rotation and will be tabbed to start against the Nationals tomorrow, taking Daniel Bard's turn in the rotation.
Marlon Byrd, 34, started the year with the Cubs before being traded to Boston when the Red Sox were in dire need of outfield help. The Cubs received pitcher Michael Bowden, who was also designated for assignment, and minor league player Hunter Cervenka.
Matsuzaka, 31, made eight rehab starts in the Red Sox minor league system this year including six for Class Triple-A Pawtucket. He's struck out 30 batters, walked 9 and allowed 7 home runs across 37 innings of work.
