San Diego Padres closer Huston Street could be on the St. Louis Cardinals’ trade radar this summer, reports Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The Padres had a representative at Busch Stadium this past week, and a Padres scout will be observing one of the Cardinals’ top minor-league affiliates this week.
So far this season, the Cardinals have been linked to several available relievers, including Brian Fuentes, who was recently designated for assignment by the Oakland Athletics, and Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Francisco Rodriguez.
As a group, Cardinals’ relievers have posted the league’s sixth-worst ERA (4.48), and they are also in the bottom third of the league is WHIP (1.37) and SO/9 (7.81).
The 28-year-old Street is expected to be available this summer. The right-hander has maintained an ERA and WHIP of 1.13 and 0.750 with 12.0 SO/9 and 3.0 BB/9 over his 25 appearances spanning 24 innings with the Padres.
Street owns career marks of 3.01 and 1.049. He’s making $7.5 million this year and his contract includes a $9 million mutual option for the 2013 season with a $500,000 buyout.
