John Tomase of the Boston Herald believes the Boston Red Sox should consider trading productive veterans such as Mike Aviles, Cody Ross and Kelly Shoppach.
Cherington should think long and hard about trading productive veterans like Mike Aviles, Cody Ross, Kelly Shoppach, or one of their many middle relievers. They’ve already dealt third baseman Kevin Youkilis to the White Sox, a playoff rival, no less.
Tomase compares the current Red Sox team to the New York Mets of two years ago. He implores the Red Sox to sell off some of their veteran talents, as the Mets did, so that they can hopefully put themselves in the position the Mets are in this year, six games over .500 at the All-Star break.
Tomase notes that if the Red Sox trade away Aviles, Ross and Shoppach, they will have players ready to replace them. In the case of Aviles and Shoppach, Boston has top prospects Jose Iglesias and Ryan Lavarnway. With Ross, Boston has shown that they have plenty of outfield depth this season, not to mention the fact that Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford are on their way back from injury.
