To replace Ortiz on their roster, the Red Sox have recalled infielder Mauro Gomez.
The Red Sox said yesterday that they would likely wait a few days before deciding whether or not Ortiz’s injured Achilles’ tendon would require a trip to the DL. He was out of the team’s lineup yesterday and in a protective boot.
Though he’s 36 years old, Ortiz is in the midst of yet another monster year. The slugger has hit at a clip of .316/.414/.609 with 25 doubles, 23 home runs and 58 RBIs.
Gomez made his major league debut earlier this season and has appeared in eight games for the Red Sox. He collected eight hits, including three doubles, over his 27 at-bats.
