Jason Kendall Announces Retirement

According to the Royals’ Double-A affiliate, veteran catcher Jason Kendall has announced his retirement from baseball less than a week after signing a minor league deal with Kansas City:

Kendall signed with the Royals last week and reported to their Double-A affiliate, but the 38-year-old announced his retirement to the media tonight after playing in only two games.

Those two games marked Kendall’s first professional action since the 2010 season, as he missed all of last year to injury.

Kendall last played in the majors with the Royals, appearing in 118 games for the club in 2010. Over 434 at-bats, he hit at a clip of .256/.318/.297 with 18 doubles and 37 RBIs.

Kendall played for five teams over his 15 years in the majors and is the owner of a career line of .288/.366/.378. His best years came as a member of the Pirates, as he was named to three All-Star games and hit at a clip of .306/.387/.418 over nine seasons in Pittsburgh.
