The Oakland Athletics have acquired catcher George Kottaras from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for right-handed reliever Fautino De Los Santos, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Brewers GM Doug Melvin said he was working on a trade that he was hopeful would be completed in a day or two (Kottaras was designated for assignment two days ago) and it appears he was true to his word. For the Brewers, the team acquires something for a player they would of otherwise lost without anything in return.

For the Athletics, this deal appears to be a depth signing for them right now. But, as Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle notes, it could also be a prelude to another trade involving catcher Kurt Suzuki.

Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports first reported the two sides were nearing a deal. Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reported the deal was agreed to and Kottaras would be headed to the A's.
