The Houston Astros have claimed outfielder Steve Pearce off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles, according to Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com (via Twitter). Another team may of also placed a waiver claim on Pearce, but the Astros had priority over all other clubs because of their MLB-worst record and were thus awarded the outfielder.

The Orioles designated Pearce for assignment last week to make room on the roster for recently acquired Omar Quintanalla. Pearce and Orioles manager Buck Showalter both hoped the 29-year-old remained with the organization, but the Astros aren't worried about accommodating the Orioles.
I love this move by the Astros, because they did what any team in a complete rebuild should do: try every player possible and hope to find a player or two that can contribute in the future. Who knows, maybe Pearce can stick with the Astros.
