While the Chicago Cubs’ first order of business is resolving the "Ryan Dempster insanity," they continue to "dangle" a bunch of players, including left-hander Paul Maholm, outfielder Alfonso Soriano and outfielder/first baseman Bryan LaHair, reports Jayson Stark of ESPN:
So while the Cubs continue to dangle a bunch of names – from Paul Maholm to Soriano to Bryan LaHair – their first order of business is still to resolve the Ryan Dempster insanity.
With Matt Garza’s recent injury and the ongoing Dempster situation, Buster Olney of ESPN said last week that the Cubs’ most marketable pitcher this summer could end up being Maholm.
The 30-year-old has maintained an ERA and WHIP of 3.74 and 1.238 on the season, but he’s only allowed five earned runs over 36 2/3 innings pitched in July, good for an ERA of 1.23. The Pittsburgh Pirates and Kansas City Royals, among others, have expressed interest in Maholm this summer.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have been tied to both Soriano and LaHair, while the Pirates have also expressed interest in LaHair this summer.
