The Toronto Blue Jays are still considering themselves to be buyers as the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline approaches, general manager Alex Anthopoulos tells MLB Network Radio.
Shi Davidi of Sports Net reported yesterday that the Blue Jays are "actively pursuing help to better position themselves for post-season contention."
Anthopoulos told Davidi pitching was a priority, and confirmed this with MLB Network Radio, adding that he’s looking to improve Toronto’s pitching depth.
Davidi speculated that top names such as Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Cole Hamels, Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Zack Greinke, and Houston Astros veteran Wandy Rodriguez could be potential Blue Jays’ targets. Chicago Cubs right-hander Matt Garza has also been tied to Toronto this season.
Beyond these pitchers, Davidi believes the club could also look into a lower-end acquisition such as Phillies right-hander Joe Blanton, Colorado Rockies veteran Jeremy Guthrie, and Minnesota Twins left-hander Francisco Liriano.
While the Blue Jays are likely eyeing all of their starting options this summer, Anthopoulos told Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports last week that his club isn’t likely to make any "big moves" until mid-July.
