The Seattle Mariners will not trade starting pitcher Felix Hernandez this summer, according to Buster Olney of ESPN, but the club could deal veteran players such as Kevin Millwood, Chone Figgins, Jason Vargas and Brandon League.
Seattle isn't going to trade Felix Hernandez, but the Mariners do have some usable parts to sell off, such as Kevin Millwood, who will return to the rotation Friday after battling a groin problem. Millwood's splits are the complete opposite of Jason Vargas -- the 37-year-old right-hander has pitched better on the road (3.10 ERA) than at home (5.29 ERA), and he's allowed only four homers in 83.1 innings.
The Mariners have lost two games in a row and six of their last 10, leaving them with an overall record of 35-49 and in last place in the American League West.
Most expect Seattle to sell this summer, and they have several pieces that could appeal to potential buyers.
Millwood has pitched well enough while calling Safeco Field home this season, posting an ERA and WHIP of 4.00 and 1.356 over his 15 starts. The 37-year-old innings-eater is making $1 million this year.
Vargas, 29, has been solid for the Mariners this season, as he has for the past four years. Over his 18 starts in 2012, the left-hander has maintained an ERA and WHIP of 4.31 and 1.171 with 6.2 SO/9 and 2.4 BB/9.
Vargas is making $4.85 million in 2012 and will be arbitration eligible once more next year before hitting the free agent market following the 2013 season.
League hasn’t been nearly as impressive as he was last season, but he still provides teams in need of relief help a veteran option. He’s maintained an ERA and WHIP of 3.50 and 1.556, is earning $5 million this season and is a free agent-to-be.
Figgins doesn’t figure to be appealing due to his age (34), poor production (.521 OPS), and hefty remaining contract ($9 million in 2012, $8 million in ’13, $9 million vesting option for ’14).
