Buster Olney of ESPN speculates that the Los Angeles Angels could be in the market for a second-tier starter, such as Oakland Athletics right-handers Brandon McCarthy and Bartolo Colon and Seattle Mariners veteran Kevin Millwood.
The back problems of Dan Haren might shift GM Jerry Dipoto into the market for a second-tier starter, like a McCarthy, Colon or Millwood.
Haren’s status for Sunday’s start is unknown at this time, as he’s undergoing further tests on his back. LA is listing the right-hander as day-to-day, though the issue could have something to do with his recently poor performance (7.16 ERA in June).
Fellow starter Jerome Williams is currently on the Angels’ disabled list, and right-hander Ervin Santana has struggled this season. The 29-year-old was shelled by the Cleveland Indians yesterday, surrendering eight runs on six hits and three walks over only 1 1/3 innings, inflating his season ERA is up to 5.75.
For these reasons, Olney believes the club could look to acquire a starter this summer to support Jered Weaver and C.J. Wilson, who have been solid this season.
