The Texas Rangers prefer Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Cole Hamels over Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Zack Greinke, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
Though the Rangers are scouting Brewers right-hander Zack Greinke, their preference would be to trade for Phillies lefty Cole Hamels, sources say.
We learned last week that the Rangers could pursue one of the market’s top-tier starters, including Greinke and Hamels.
Texas has been listed as the early favorite to land Hamels if the Phillies ultimately do decide to trade him. Rosenthal notes that while the Rangers do continue to scout the Brewers and Greinke, they would prefer Hamels over the former Cy Young winner.
The Phillies are currently 14 games out of first place in the National League East, and Rosenthal believes their "path to becoming a seller is increasingly clear."
While Greinke has experienced success as a pitcher in the American League, something Hamels can’t boast, the right-hander does carry with him issues surrounding his past issues with anxiety. It’s not clear if the Rangers are more turned off to Greinke for this reason, or if they are simply more interested in Hamels’ impressive post-season track record.
