The Washington Nationals have designated infielder Cesar Izturis for assignment, the team announced today. The move was made in order to make room on the roster for shortstop Ian Desmond, who is being activated off the disabled list.

The Nationals now have ten days to trade, release or outright Izturis to the minor leagues. However, because of Izturis' service time in the big leagues, he would have to approve an assignment to the minor leagues.
The veteran infielder began the year with the Brewers and batted just .235/.248/.333 in 169 plate appearances with the team. He was soon let go by the team when he was selected off of waivers by the Nationals. The 32-year-old Izturis played in just five games with the Nationals this year, and went 2-for-4 with a double in his extremely limited playing time.
