To make room for McPherson and Wilson on their roster, the Pirates have designated right-hander Juan Cruz for assignment and placed infielder Jordy Mercer on the paternity list.
Cruz was activated from the disabled list last week, returning from an elbow injury. The 33-year-old has maintained an ERA of 2.78 on the season for the Pirates, though his WHIP is far less impressive; 1.626.
Wilson made his major league debut for the Pirates last night, striking out three batters while surrendering two hits over his one inning of work. Prior to his call up, the 25-year-old had posted an ERA of 3.84 for the Pirates’ Triple-A affiliate.
McPherson also made his major league debut last night, going two innings for Pittsburgh while surrendering one hit with two strikeouts. The 24-year-old has spent a majority of the season with the club’s Double- and Triple-A affiliates, maintaining an ERA of 3.60 over eleven starts.
