The Nationals will have a total of ten days to trade or release Maldonado, but the team will look into a minor league assignment that would keep the veteran in the organization.
The 33-year-old hasn't received much playing time in his career, and he played in just 4 games this season and didn't record a hit in any of his 9 plate appearances. He did walk twice, though, and struck out 4 times. He only has 74 career plate appearances scattered over the past several years, and owns a triple slash of .159/.260/.317.
