The Houston Astros are expected to promote third baseman Matt Dominguez from Triple-A Oklahoma City today, reports Zachary Levine of MLB.com:
Astros GM Luhnow confirms Matt Dominguez is headed to Houston. No transaction yet, though.— Zachary Levine (@zacharylevine) August 30, 2012
The 23-year-old Dominguez, acquired in the July 4 deal that sent Carlos Lee to the Miami Marlins, should be in the Astros' clubhouse prior to today's series finale with the Giants. Dominguez will likely provide depth off the bench with outfielder Ben Francisco nursing a wrist strain.
Dominguez, who is regarded as a defensive whiz, has struggled with the bat at Triple-A this season. The youngster is hitting just .258/.308/.367 with nine home runs in one hundred twenty-two games between the Marlins and Astros' systems. Dominguez appeared in four games for the Astros in early July, racking up two singles in eight at-bats.
Astros GM Jeff Luhnow said a corresponding roster move will be announced later today.
