The Boston Red Sox lost yet again on Friday, dropping the team one-game below .500 (again) and 10 games back of the AL East leading New York Yankees. Let's check out the latest news out of the AL East...

  • The Red Sox placed infielder Nick Punto and outfielder Carl Crawford on waivers, but have not put anyone else through the waiver process (yet), reports Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe. Teams place just about every player on waivers to gauge interest, even if they have no interest in moving the player.
  • Baltimore Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts underwent surgery to repair a labral tear in his right hip, according to Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com. The surgery will likely end his 2012 season, meaning the 34-year-old has played in just 115 games over the past 3 years.
  • New York Yankees top prospect Mason Williams underwent left labrum (shoulder) season-ending surgery on Friday, according to Josh Norris of the Trentonian. With other Yankees prospects struggling and/or also hurt, Williams was considered to be the top prospect in the Yankees system.
