Phillies Catcher Carlos Ruiz Out Majority of Season With Foot Injury

The Philadelphia Philles are expected to be without All-Star catcher Carlos Ruiz for the majority of the remainder of the season, according to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com

"A MRI revealed a partial tear in the foot. He is expected to miss four to six weeks."

The team called up veteran Hector Luna, and will lean on Brian Schneider and Erik Kratz to take over behind the plate.

Ruiz was one of Philadelphia's lone bright spots in an ugly season. He was hitting .335/.399/.539 and had already set career-highs in both home runs (14) and RBI (58).

Schneider, who was a starter with the Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals organization for several years, has caught 21 games for the Phillies this season. He is a career .247/.321/.369 hitter.

Kratz is a 32-year-old who has just 24 career major league games under his belt. He has three home runs and three doubles in just 23 at bats for the Phillies this season and had a .266/.326/.540 slash line at Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Luna, a utility player, has hit .246/.295/.386 in 26 games with the Phillies this season, having played first base, third base and left field. The 32 year-old had played in a grand total of 29 major league games over the previous four seasons.
