Dodgers DFA Tony Gwynn Jr., Recall Jerry Sands

The Los Angeles Dodgers have designated outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. for assignment, the team has announced:

In a corresponding roster move, the Dodgers recalled outfielder/first baseman Jerry Sands from Triple-A.

Gwynn, 29, has appeared in 103 games with the Dodgers this season. Over 259 at-bats, he hit at a clip of .232/.276/.293 with eight doubles and four triples.

Gwynn signed with the Dodgers prior to the 2011 season after spending five years in the bigs with the Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres. He owns a career line of .244/.312/.318.

Sands made his season debut with the Dodgers earlier this year, appearing in eight games. Over twenty at-bats, the 24-year-old collected four hits, including two doubles.

Sands has spent a majority of the season with the Dodgers’ Triple-A affiliate. Over ninety-five games and 357 at-bats, he’s hit .286/.367/.518 with fourteen doubles, three triples and twenty-one home runs.
