The San Francisco Giants are holding a slim half-game lead on the Los Angeles Dodgers, but the Arizona Diamondbacks have come along as well, making it a three team race in the NL West. Let's check out the latest news and notes from the division...

  • Right-handed pitcher Kip Wells has cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Class Triple-A Tucson from the San Diego Padres, as reported by Bill Center of The San Diego Union-Tribune.
  • Dangled in trade rumors during the trade deadline frenzy, Justin Upton is still with the D'Backs. But, will he be in the off-season? As Jerry Crasnick of ESPN writes, it's a murky future for Justin Upton in Arizona.
  • The Giants have checked in on free agent Lyle Overbay, reports Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle (Sulia link). But it sounds like the Giants want to sign Overbay to a minor league deal, which doesn't interest the first baseman right now.
