The Baltimore Orioles are interested in free agent first baseman Lyle Overbay, who was designated for assignment by the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 30, reports Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun:

The Orioles continue to have interest in recently released first baseman Lyle Overbay, who is expected to make his decision on his next team soon.

Overbay hit well over forty-five games with the Diamondbacks this season, maintaining a clip of .292/.367/.448 with nine doubles and two home runs. The 35-year-old is a career .271/.354/.439 hitter over his twelve seasons in the majors.

Connolly notes that Overbay is likely to select a contending team "for which he could immediately play a significant amount." The veteran reportedly has no interest in heading to the minors.

Baltimore could offer significant time at first, as they’ve had five players man the position so far this season. Current first baseman Mark Reynolds has improved recently, but the left-handed Overbay could at least be used as a platoon option with the right-handed Reynolds.

Connolly notes that, beyond the Orioles, several other teams are reportedly courting Overbay, including the San Francisco Giants and Cincinnati Reds.
