The Chicago Cubs claimed P Jason Berken from the Baltimore Orioles, reports Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune.

By making the claim, P Blake Parker will be moved to the 60-day DL with elbow soreness. Berken was pitching as a starter in class AAA for the O’s.

As a starter in the minors, Berken’s made 26 starts and pitched 144 innings. His line for class AAA was solid, a 3.50 ERA, 98 Ks, and a 1.38 WHIP. For the year, he’s only registered one inning, where he gave up two earned runs (five unearned) for an ERA of 18.00 on May 7, 2012.

He pitched 47 innings with a 5.36 ERA, 41 Ks, and a 1.79 WHIP out of the pen last year. Berken’s added versatility of relief and starting potential allows flexibility for the Cubs determination on his role. He will join a Cub team with a record of 51-86.
