The Washington Nationals have signed right-hander Ross Ohlendorf and left-hander Sean West to minor league contracts, reports Matt Eddy of Baseball America:
#Nationals sign two pitchers to minor lge deals: RHP Ross Ohlendorf & LHP Sean West, the 44th pick in ’05 draft who missed all last season
— Matt Eddy (@eddymk) January 10, 2013
Ohlendorf appeared in 13 games, including nine starts, for the San Diego Padres last season. The 30-year-old maintained an ERA of 7.77 over 48 2/3 innings of work.
Since what appeared to be his breakout 2009 season, during which he went 11-10 with a 3.92 ERA over 29 starts for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Ohlendorf has bounced around. He experienced some continued success in Pittsburgh in 2010 before collapsing the next season. He’s since spent time between the majors and minors with the Boston Red Sox and Padres.
Over parts of six seasons at the major league level, Ohlendorf owns a career ERA of 5.10.
West started 22 games for the Marlins from 2009-10, maintaining an ERA of 5.03. The former top prospect spent the past few seasons at the minor league level and was out of baseball altogether in 2012.
