The Philadelphia Phillies signed Rodrigo Lopez to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training. If he makes the club he will get a $1 million base salary plus incentives, according to Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com. Cole Hamels, Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, John Lannan and Kyle Kendrick are expected to be the starting rotation, but Lopez will provide them with some veteran depth.
Lopez, 37, appeared in four big league games last season with the Chicago Cubs, where he was 0-1 with a 5.68 ERA in 6⅓ innings pitched. He spent most of his time in Triple-A, where he went 2-5 with a 5.28 ERA in 73⅓ innings. For his career, he is 81-89 with a 4.82 ERA in 11 seasons.
Lopez' best years came with the Orioles, where he went 60-58 with a 4.72 ERA in five seasons from 2002-2006. He played for the Phillies in 2009 when he went 3-1 with a 5.70 ERA over 30 innings pitched.
