Free agent outfielder Scott Hairston is expected to make his decision on where to play in 2013 and possibly beyond this week, according to Jim Bowden of ESPN:

It’s been reported that the New York Mets and New York Yankees are finalists for Hairston, but the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves have also been tied to the outfielder this offseason.

Hairston has spent the past two seasons with the Mets. Last year he hit .263/.299/504 with 25 doubles, three triples, 20 home runs with eight stolen bases in 10 attempts over 377 at-bats. He’s struggled to get on base at a consistent clip throughout his career, but he has shown some decent pop. Over nine seasons in the majors the 32-year-old has hit .247/.302/.449.

Hairston has been used mostly in a reserve or platoon role throughout his career. He manned all three outfield positions last year for the Mets, but he spent a majority of his time in left or right.

Hairston’s decision could come down to his role and how much playing time he’ll receive in 2013. If he were to sign with a team such as the Mets he would see an increased role. If he winds up with the other New York team he’d be a reserve.Mlbdd-twitter-insert_medium
