The Detroit Tigers have re-signed utility player Don Kelly to a minor league contract that includes an invitation to major league spring training, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.
The Tigers signed Kelly as a free agent in January of 2009, and he’s spent the past four seasons with the club as a utility player. While he’s never offered much with the bat, Kelly has provided the Tigers with defensive versatility. Last season he manned every defensive position except shortstop and catcher.
The Tigers decided to remove Kelly from their roster in October, outrighting him to Triple-A. He didn’t accept the minor league assignment and instead elected to become a free agent.
Kelly appeared in 75 games for the Tigers last season, hitting .186/.276/.248 with two doubles, one triple and one home run over 113 at-bats. The 32-year-old owns a career line of .232/.283/.344 over parts of five seasons at the major league level.
